At the luncheon on February 24, 2016, 255 guests gathered to recognize Groovin’ with Marcus, SERA Field, and the Liz Rocks Campaign for their positive impacts to Parks across the City. Groovin’ with Marcus is an exercise program for people with disabilities that utilizes dance to provide a fun and active workout.  SERA Field, which stands for South End Recreation and Adventure located in South Tacoma, successfully opened the first all-season turf field on March 10, 2016. The Liz Rocks Campaign is working with GMPF to provide the Tacoma community with a climbing/bouldering wall located at either Point Defiance Park or Swan Creek.

This year, our luncheon at STAR center raised over $47,000 to support the great work that GMPF and Metro Parks Tacoma are doing. Because Parks Matter is an opportunity to contribute core support to GMPF and invest in our work to improve, maintain, and enhance Metro Parks Tacoma programs and projects.

Play in Peace Day

Play in Peace Day is held annually on the third Friday of May. The first Play in Peace Day was the grand opening of Wright Park Play & Sprayground and McCarver Parks as a part of the Zina Linnik Project. Officially proclaimed by the Metropolitan Park District, the City of Tacoma, Pierce County, and the State of Washington, Play in Peace Day honors what children and neighbors can do by coming together to create and maintain beautiful, safe places for children and families to play.

Every year, the Greater Metro Parks Foundation, Metro Parks Tacoma, and our other community partners encourage everyone to go out and play in peace in our neighborhood parks. Fun activities are organized throughout the park district to commemorate the day.
