What is the Imagine Eastside Campaign?

The Imagine Eastside project will serve 2X the youth currently served in East Tacoma. A fabulous new Eastside Community Center — with a gym, pool, recording studio and classrooms – offers us the opportunity to promote the safety, physical and emotional health of 2X of youth. Its an exciting partnership with Metro Parks Tacoma and the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound.

A Long-Awaited Place to Gather, Play and Learn

In addition to hosting a Boys & Girls Club, the center includes aquatics programs; weight and cardio rooms, fitness classes, basketball, volleyball and other sports in the multi-use gymnasium; creative space for music, theater, dance and visual arts; a sound-recording studio; a teaching kitchen; and event rental space for parties and community events.

Why is the new Eastside Community Center needed?

The Eastside neighborhood is home to the most diverse population in Tacoma. More grandparents are raising their grandchildren in the Eastside and the area has the second-lowest household median income in the city.

The youth of the Eastside have few resources, and they are exposed to the negative influences of the streets, such as gangs and drugs. The Boys & Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound has served the Eastside community for more than 50 years but are at capacity in their current space.  The new Center will allow the Clubs to more than double the number of youth served on average per day.

What kind of programming do the Boys & Girls Clubs offer?

Club kids are offered programming in three content areas: 1) Academic Success, 2) Character & Leadership, and 3) Healthy Lifestyles. All of the programs promote the safety, and physical and emotional well being of our members. Youth are taught how to make positive choices, take responsibility for their academics, and encouraged to be engaged community members. In addition, Club kids form positive relationships with caring adults who help them navigate the hardships they face such as bullying, gangs, poverty, academic struggles and peer pressure. In addition, Club kids receive healthy snacks and warm meals.

What is the status of the project?

Eastside Community Center is open. A grand celebration took place on October 20, 2018 with close to 2,500 people visiting the center on the first day! The Boys & Girls Clubs will open their doors on November 1. But we still have work to do towards our goal.

To date, $9.7 million has been secured of the $11.5 million required to complete the project and fully fund a $7 million youth development endowment, ensuring the Eastside youth are served in perpetuity.
