In Memory of Karen Vialle

Karen Vialle Scholarship Fund

Metro Parks Tacoma and the Greater Metro Parks Foundation partner to create an environment where kids, regardless of economic means, are able to grow, thrive and enjoy Tacoma parks and programs through the Active Kids Fund. This fee-assistance scholarship program allows thousands of low-income kids and families access to Metro Parks’ world-class programming each year.

In memory of Karen Vialle, a lifetime Tacoma resident and dedicated civil servant, a scholarship fund has been created within the Active Kids Fund to support after-school enrichment activities for elementary school students across the city. These enrichment activities take place at Tacoma Public Schools sites directly after school, and include sports, arts and culture, and STEM.

A majority of Tacoma families struggle with poverty—63% of Tacoma Public School students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a common poverty indicator. For children of low-income families, enrichment activities are incredibly important, offering children and youth opportunities for social involvement with peers and interaction with positive role models.

Scholarships are available to low-income Tacoma residents.
